How to Get a Bonded Title in Alabama
Simply follow the steps below to apply for your Alabama bonded title.
Step 1. Contact the Alabama DMV
The Alabama Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Division typically requires a bonded title for the cases mentioned above. To confirm your eligibility for a bonded title, contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office.
Step 2. Request a vehicle records search
Ask your DMV to check for any existing vehicle records or confirm a clean record. If your vehicle has a lien, you might need to contact the former owner.
Step 3. Request a bonded title application
Next, request a title surety bond form (MVT 10-1A) through the MyDMV online portal.
You’ll need to provide ONE of the following proof of ownership documents:
- Original outstanding title (stamped SURRENDERED)
- Bill of Sale containing the VIN
- Most current registration in your name
- Insurance settlement
- Foreclosure deed (Manufactured Homes only)
- ALVIN title application from an inactive dealership
The Department of Revenue will review your request and, if approved, respond with the form and your required bond amount.
Step 4. Purchase an Alabama title bond
Once the state confirms the bond amount you need, buy your Alabama certificate of title bond. Your premium cost will be based on your vehicle value and bond amount, starting at $100 for the three-year term.
Step 5. Submit your application and bond
Finally, submit your bond and application documents through MyDMV or at your local DMV office to receive your bonded title.
How Much Does an Alabama Bonded Title Cost?
Alabama defective title bond costs start at just $100, but exact prices vary based on the bond amount. Your bond amount must be 1.5 times the vehicle value.
You’ll also need to pay the $15 title application fee for motor vehicles or $20 for manufactured homes. Some counties and officials may charge additional processing fees.
Do I Need to Renew My Bonded Title?
No, your Alabama bonded title will expire three years from the effective date and won’t require renewal. As long as there are no pending claims, your bond will be returned and the DMV will issue a standard title.
