What Is a Nevada Private Postsecondary School Bond?
A Nevada private postsecondary educational institution license bond, or private school bond, protects student funds if a school closes.
The Nevada Commission on Postsecondary Education (CPE) requires all privately-owned postsecondary schools to file a surety bond. This includes colleges as well as vocational, technical, business and professional schools.
What Are the Bond Coverage Requirements?
All private postsecondary schools need to file a minimum $10,000 surety bond. The exact amount is calculated as the cost of tuition, multiplied by projected student enrollment, multiplied by the percentage of program length related to one calendar year.

How Does a Nevada Private School Bond Work?
When you purchase this bond, you enter into a three-party agreement.
| Bond Party | Description |
|---|---|
| Principal | The private postsecondary school owner(s) purchasing the bond |
| Obligee | The Nevada Commission on Postsecondary Education requiring the bond |
| Surety | The issuing surety provider |
If you violate state law, harmed parties can file bond claims to recover any losses. The surety will pay valid claims up to your full bond amount. You’ll then need to reimburse the surety.

How to Get a Private Postsecondary School License in Nevada
First, determine if your school is required to be licensed by filling out and submitting an evaluation form.
If the CPE determines that you need a license, submit the required documentation, which usually includes a CPA-prepared financial statement and surety bond. You’ll also need to get fingerprinted and complete a background check.
The CPE meets four times a year, typically in February, May, August and November. Submit your application at least 60 days before the meeting where you want it considered.
Note: The CPE does not license cosmetology, barbering or CDL driving schools.
